The U.S. House of Representatives Fiscal Year FY 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) spending bill released this week would cut HUD’s housing and homelessness programs by $939 million. While this is concerning, the House rejected President Trump’s plan to cut HUD by 43% and consolidate the five largest rental assistance programs into a state-run block grant.
The House’s THUD bill also ignored the president’s proposal to consolidate Homeless Assistance Grants and HOPWA into the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program. Instead, it would increase federal Homeless Assistance Grants by $107 million and preserve HOPWA.
Your advocacy is working! But we need to keep it up as Congress continues to work on the bill this summer.
Ohio has two important Congressional members for advocacy: U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Chagrin Falls), who sits on the House THUD Subcommittee, and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
The National Low Income Housing Coalition has created two easy ways for you to advocate for increased federal funding:
- Take Action advocacy tool
- Appropriations sign-on letter
